Chelsea Women 1-0 Manchester United as the Blues go top and Man United drop in WSL by Michelle

Sam Kerr proved to be the difference maker as Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 at Kingsmeadow to move two points clear at the top of the WSL. A tight game was decided by the Australian in the 22nd minute to hand the Blues a vital three points in the title race.

Ella Toone tried to respond instantly for United as they broke into the Chelsea half  but her shot went narrowly wide.

There was a huge call for a Man Utd penalty shortly after and replays showed there was reason to be after it appeared Parris was clipped as she broke free in the area.

United continued to try and find the equaliser with close calls from Millie Turner and Alessia Russo.

United came into the second half lively with Russo blasting a shot at goal after finding space in the area, however, it was Chelsea and Kerr who went closest to scoring as the Australian struck narrowly wide of Earps’ goal.

Russo and Parris both continued to cause problems down the Blues right hand side. A series of second balls being won almost saw Leah Galton through on goal but Kadeisha Buchanan had other ideas.

Skinner’s side just couldn’t get a break-through as Emma Hayes and her Chelsea side went onto win and move back to the top of the WSL table. For both teams, their attention will now turn to the FA Cup quarter-finals taking place on Sunday 19th March 2023.
