Highlights: Lionesses beat Brazil on penalties to win Finalissima 2023! by Michelle
It’s great to hear that Arsenal Women’s Leah Williamson captained the Lionesses to victory over Brazil Women in the Finalissima 2023. The match was held at a packed Wembley Stadium and it’s also worth noting that Rafaelle, Leah’s fellow Arsenal defender, captained Brazil in the same game.
It was an exciting match! England’s Lionesses played well in the first half, taking the lead, but the second half saw a tactical change from the young Brazilian team, putting England on the defensive. Brazil then managed to score an equalizer in the 93rd minute, leading the match to be decided in a penalty shootout. The Lionesses won 4-2 in the shootout, securing their victory over Brazil Women in the Finalissima 2023.
“I was pretty calm [in the shootout]. This game brings us so much information,” Wiegman told BBC Sport.
“In the second half we really struggled. In the moment I don’t like it, because it’s very nice when you control the game. And we lost control in the second half.
“But afterwards, [I feel] we take so much from this game. We really needed this in our preparation for the World Cup.”
